Marjam Congratulates Green Depot on Its LEED Platinum Rating
Marjam affiliate company, Green Depot, located at 222 Bowery in New York, was the first retailer to receive a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) platinum rating. Platinum is the highest rating achievable. In a ceremony at the store on April 6th, Sarah Beatty founder and president, was presented with the award by Russell Unger, executive director of Urban Green, the New York City chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council. Mr.Unger in his remarks congratulated Green Depot on the use of recycled, reclaimed and energy efficient materials.
The Bowery location is the flagship location of Green Depot, which currently has 10 locations that focus on making ecologically friendly building products, cleaning products, home products and dealing with air quality issues in an easy to understand way, at prices competitive with other less responsible choices. Green Depot also shares warehouse space with most Marjam facilities, for quick and easy pick up and shipping points.
At the ceremony attended by Green builders, architects, specifies and local politicians including Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, Ms. Beatty said "from the beginning our company's goal has been to serve the construction trade who build our communities. For green building to really take root, the green supply chain must be there and be simple for builders and end users to embrace. Green Depot strives to do that with 24/7 delivery, a knowledgeable and dedicated staff, a rigorous assessment filter for the products we carry and an icon system that helps translate the clear bottom line benefits of the products we offer."
The Green Depot space has an interesting past, this landmark building was built in 1885 as the first YMCA in New York, later artist Mark Rothko and author William Burroughs lived in the building. In keeping with the building's history the architectural team at Mapos Llc, helped to preserve the best elements of the space and by using environmentally correct materials, lighting, HVAC and water, treatment were able to achieve the Platinum rating. All building and interior design products were supplied by Green Depot, of course !
